چکیده

EFFECT OF CONCENTRATED LOADS ON SHALLOW BURIED POLYVINYL CHLORIDE AND POLYETHYLENE TUBING by TIMOTHY JAMES MCGRATH Submitted to the Department of Civil Engineering on June 27, 1975 in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Civil Engineering 0 This thesis presents a study of the behavior of PVC and corrugated PE plastic pipe under simulated wheel loads. Data is presented on pipe deflections, soil-pipe interface pressures, and soil strains for pipe buried with 6, 12 and 18 inches of soil cover and surface loaded with 10,000 pounds on a 10 inch diameter plate. In 5 of the tests the PVC pipe was instrumented with strain gages on the inside and outside of the pipe at the crown, invert and springlines. The test results are compared with an elastic theory for deeply buried pipe to observe if the elastic predictions can be used as a design basis for the shallow burial-concentrated load problem. Loss of lipid to plastic tubing.

14C-labeled oleic acid and (3)H-labeled monoether in a bile salt solution were perfused through three types of plastic tubing. Large proportions of lipid were lost to the walls of silicone rubber and polyvinyl chloride tubes. The major portion of the lipid lost was recoverable only when chloroform-methanol was perfused through the tubings. On the other hand, very little lipid was lost to the wa...

Development and Testing of the Check-valve Spout Adapter

INTRODUCTION Several major changes in sap collection equipment and methods have occurred over the past 10-15 years. The introduction of small spouts, a transition in composition from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tubing to polyethylene (PE) tubing, and improvements in fittings have occurred. These changes, along with continued modifications in tubing system design, installation, and maintenance as w...

Effect of the chemical nature of fixed-bed reactor support materials on bioreactor performance and biomass accumulation

This study investigated the effect, on reactor performance and biomass retention inside the bed, of the material used to make the supports of anaerobic fixed-bed reactors. Three inert supports of similar shape but made of three different materials polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, high-density polyethylene were manufactured and used. All three supports had the same specific surface area but di...

Protein adsorption on ex vivo catheters and polymers exposed to peritoneal dialysis effluent.

BACKGROUND Deposition of proteins on surfaces of medical devices has been recognized to putatively relate to the process of regulation of biomaterial-associated complications by attachment of fibrin clots, eukaryotic cells, and microbes. The molecules adsorb to a varying extent, depending not only on the physicochemical properties of the biomaterial, but also on the composition of the host flui...

Occupational asthma due to polyethylene shrink wrapping (paper wrapper's asthma).

Occupational asthma due to the pyrolysis products of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) produced by shrink wrapping processes has previously been reported. The first case of occupational asthma in a shrink wrap worker using a different plastic, polyethylene, is reported; the association was confirmed by specific bronchial provocation testing.
